3 - Autumn in Japan #3 - |
- Tokyo Yasukuni Shrine Antique Market -
- Tokyo Yasukuni Shrine Antique Market -
We visited a couple of antique markets in Tokyo. First we
tried Yasukuni Shrine flea market and here Chris found
wooden wagashi moulds, which was exactly what he wanted
to buy during our holiday in Japan.
First he found this lotus flower design. A crack had been
mended in the past using a piece of iron, which caused a problem
at the customs in Amsterdam Schiphol Airport.
Chris was also happy with this sea bream, which he
especially wanted to get.
After Yasukuni Shrine we then went to Tokyo International
Forum for another antique market.
Again we came across many wagashi moulds. This one has
a bamboo design and was used in a confectionary shop in Niigata
prefecture.
(I'm sorry the design in the first photo is upside down !! )
Chris is planning on using these moulds along with Japanese
washi paper for an art project. I'll talk about it when he finishes it.
Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden -
On another day we went to Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden.
I've been here many times since my childhood but this time
for the first time I entered the park from Okido entrance.
I was impressed with the brand new greenhouse by the gate.
The weather was brilliant and we had a great time going
around the park.
This is truly an oasis in Tokyo.
Choji-giku Bed Ichi-roku Style
Ohgiku Bed Atsumono-giku
We luckily had a chance to see a special chrysanthemum
exhibition. It showcased the art of displaying chrysanthemums
in the Imperial style - wonderful !
Nezu Museum -

We also visited Nezu Museum and saw a special exhibition
on old tea bowls. There were many visitors in kimono there.
You can also enjoy strolling in the museum's beautiful garden.
They also have a nice museum shop where there were many
wonderful items.
I just bought a box of chop stick paper holders, designed by one
of my favourite Japanese artists of the Edo era, Ogata Kenzan.
Thank you very much for reading this series on Autumn in Japan.
We put a piggy bank on a shelf to save some money for our
next holiday:)
We now see frost on top of roofs in the morning in Cardiff.
A Christmas tree will be decorated in this corner very soon.
I guess everybody will be getting super busy from now on
as the big holiday gets closer.
Please take care and have a good week !!
