Hanabira-mochi - |
Blwyddyn newydd dda!!
Happy New Year!
I wish everyone a wonderful New Year.
I made Hanabira-mochi, which is a traditional Japanese cake
made with white bean paste, miso, shiratama rice flour, and burdock.
This is often served at the first tea ceremony of the New Year.
I used raspberries from our garden instead of cochineal
to colour the rice cake, and parsnip instead of burdock for the decoration.
In Japan, burdock is regarded as one of the vegetables that
brings good luck because of its strong roots and length.
I'd like to practice making this more so that
I can make better ones for next year :)
I used a bit of Skimmia to decorate the plate.
We planted two in the garden, but moved them into pots
after seeing one in a pot in a lovely cafe we went to
in Tewksburry in September. Skimmia is supposed to like shade,
but ours are doing better now they're more in the sun.
There are already lots of tiny buds on the plant.
We're looking forward to them flowering.
